Outlook Express (what I normally use to view email) has been pissing me off, not sending/receiving mails. Plus, I can't check my mail when I'm on my laptop. So, I'm going to be using Gmail from now on.

gandolforf@gmail.com

I should still get emails on the old one, if anyone misses this/forgets, but it won't be immediate because I won't have the programme open all the time any more.

Since I've not really used gmail before (I've had this email awhlie, just...never used it), I was wondering if anyone knew of a way I can...make it go HEY HEY YOU'VE GOT MAIL, LOOK, THERE'S A NEW EMAIL, STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND SEE WHAT IT IS. I mean...well, Outlook Express sends a little envelope icon to my task bar, so even when I've got everything minimized, I can still tell when I've got new email. Is the only way to know at once if you've got new gmail is to keep the tab open, and continually look for the not-very-obvious (#) saying there's something unread? I guess...I can do this, especially if I'm able to have all of my email on both computers...even something like Yahoo! Mail's pop-up in the the middle of the screen all "HEY THERE'S SOMETHING, DO YOU WANT TO SEE IT NOW OR LATER" would be a little more attention-getting. I couldn't find anything in the settings or labs, is there...anything to download? Idk...? I'd just like...some sort of more obvious notification than the text on the tab changing, since I have Firefox minimized/background a lot of the time :\

edit: So I just found this "Notifier" thing? I'm going to try that, see how it works! HOPEFULLY WELL.

edit 2: YES AWESOME IT WORKS. New email system all set up :D

also, because I want these to hatch:

"I hate it when you lie to me," she said simply.

"I didn't lie, Liz! For God's sake!"

"Sometimes people lie just by being quiet."

"I was going to tell you anyway," he said. "I was only trying to find my way to it."

But was that true? Was it really? He didn't know. It was weird shit, crazy shit, but that wasn't the reason he might have lied by silence. He had felt the urge to be silent the way a man who has observed blood in his stool or felt a lump in his groin might feel the urge to be silent. Silence in such cases is irrational...but fear is also irrational.

And there was something else: he was a writer, an imaginer. He has never met one--including himself--who has more than the vaguest idea of why he or she did anything. He sometimes believed that the compulsion to make fiction was no more than a bulwark against confusion, maybe even insanity. It was a desperate imposition of order by people able to find that precious stuff only in their minds...never in their hearts.

Inside him, a voice whispered for the first time: Who are you when you write, Thad? Who are you then?

And for that voice, he had no answer.

"The Dark Half"

Just a little quote I wanted to share, along with this question for my writerly friends: Do you find that when you're depressed, your characters, your stories, go away? I don't just mean the lack of inspiration and motivation to actually write them, I mean the part of the characters, the people, that live in your head. Are they gone, or silent, when things build up in your head to a point?

I know sometimes my guys won't shut up so that there are five or six different scenarios/story arcs going on at the exact same time, things I can hear and see (in my head, not physically). But sometimes, even when I need them and call to them, they're...blocked? They can't get to me, or I can't reach them, through the tangled mess that is everything else. I know there are different levels of writer's block...the type under which you still write, but think everything you write is shit. The type where you know what you want to write, know what happens in the story, but simply cannot get started, and there's the type where no one, no characters/people/stories is coming. They're either not doing anything, or they're not there. I'm having trouble saying what I mean, I guess, but to those of you that write, I get the feeling you'll already know what I mean.

So. What do you guys think?

GO LOOK. RIGHT NOW.

What kinds of cereal (cold and hot) do you have access to? If none because of your current location, which ones do you think are at home?

AND GO

WE HAVE:

Emmy's: Captain Crunch OOPS ALL BERRIES, some kind of fruit loops I think (she wanted Cinnamon Toast Crunch but I said "nooooooo")
Dustin's: Instant oatmeal--brown sugar & maple variety
Mine: Special K, Corn Chex, Bran Flakes

I ACTUALLY REALLY LIKE BRAN FLAKES

So who knows some stuff about architecture?

I need some general info (schooling, internships(?), jobs, processes, etc) for a story. Yes, I know I can Google this, but I really don't feel like reading 65786415 pages that I won't understand when, for the most part, the gist is all I really want.

I need something for a story. What's something someone that does not like coffee, but who is allergic to chocolate, might order in a coffee shop? I'm looking for a sort of hot/coffee drink, not "ice water" or "apple pie". Something with either a very mild coffee taste, or very strong other flavour, or both?

And then I need ideas for something that someone who frequents coffee shops and who has a taste for it might order.

Anything helps, even "they probably would not order ____". Thanks!

Goal: To lose 25 more lbs (for a 50lb total) before I go to California (Feb 18 '10).

Can I do it? Probably not. Should I try? Yes. With hours looking as if they might start going down, I'll be able to get on the treadmill. I've been steady at 25lb lost for the past couple of weeks...good that it's not backtracking, but no new progress, either. I dislike this overtime so for so many reasons. Of course "the monies" isn't one of them, especially with Christmas. Ohgod I've spent so much already on gifts for birthdays and Christmases. The OT makes that happen reasonably, without putting myself into debt. (Just shrinking my savings a bit.)

ALSO YOU GUYS if you wanted Christmas cards, PLEASE SEND ME A PM WITH YOUR ADDRESS. I asked a little bit go, but I guess either no one saw or...no one wants a pink card? (I had to go and let Emmy choose them...) Well if you do, please let me know where to send one. You should also send it if you'd like a little Christmas gift (I want to send gifts, okay. And it's just something little, so ADDRESS ME).

I got up to get a water and then to go to the bathroom, and I forgot my water bottle in the bathroom ):
